The Mexican firm said in a statement that a court denied Apple”s bid to protect the iPhone name in a case that began in 2009, when iFone sued the California-based company because the similar-sounding names caused confusion.

iFone has also countersued for damages, and stands to be awarded up to 40 percent of iPhone sales revenue in Mexico, apart from possibly blocking the use of the iPhone brand in the country.

Apple owns Class 9 and Class 28 trademarks for the iPhone in Mexico, which cover electronic game devices. The fruity giant filed a lawsuit in 2009, contesting the Class 38 trademark owned by iFone in the country, which covers telecommunication services.

Despite the iPhone technically not falling under the telecommunication services sector, Apple’s services such as iMessage and FaceTime could be said to, giving Apple the starting point for their suit.

iFone however disagreed, declaring that they were actively using the trademark, and thwarted Apple’s attempts to register their own Class 38 trademark for the iPhone in the country.

Apple’s has been quite active in litigation for the past few years, with the Samsung patent infringement case the most high profile in recent times. If the court decides to ban Apple from using the iPhone trademark in Mexico, it could be a serious blow for the company!!!

The sleek and gorgeous HTC Windows Phone 8X, together with the slightly smaller 8S, will debut late this month and mid-December for the price of S$828 (US$665.27) and S$418 (US$335.85), respectively. Both handsets will be available in all South Asian countries as well.

As for HTC’s One X+, the updated version of the One X that was released earlier this year, will retail in Singapore for a cool S$868 (US$697.41) from late-November and be sold in the very same countries as the company’s Windows Phone 8 devices. It runs on the latest Google Android OS, Android 4.1, which makes it one of the few handsets to launch with Jelly Bean, but does not come with LTE support.

The smartphone manufacturer is only launching the 3G model of its new handset in the region. If you want 4G, you’ll have to stick with the older HTC One XL.

Following the furor over the company’s mapping service, the iOS software chief refused to sign a letter apologizing for its shortcomings and got the boot as a result, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The exit of Apple iOS software chief Scott Forstall was apparently anything but quiet. Forstall was forced out after he refused to sign a letter apologizing for problems with Apple Maps, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The New York Times confirmed the firing, along with the unrelated ouster of Apple’s new retail chief, John Browett.

The Journal reported that some within Apple considered Forstall a divisive figure who “never fit into the culture at Apple,” and who had long rankled other company execs but enjoyed the confidence of Steve Jobs. As WSJ reporter Jessica Lessin wrote:

Mr. Forstall’s departure came after mounting tension with members of Apple’s executive ranks. For years, senior executives had complained that he wasn’t cooperative and showed off his close relationship with Mr. Jobs.

In fact, Forstall recently sent an email to some of the folks on Apple’s iOS software team saying that the group “wasn’t working on enough big ideas in mobile software,” according to the WSJ. That’s effectively saying that Forstall thought the company was struggling to compete, so it’s no surprise that tensions were mounting.

Apple has said that Forstall will be replaced by Craig Federighi in 2013. Federighi will oversee both the iOS and OS X groups under one umbrella.

The exit of Apple Inc’s longtime mobile software products chief may be a surprise, but a band of able executives led by Tim Cook and a bigger role for design boss Jonathan Ive meant the company was in good hands, analysts said on Tuesday.

Ive, Apple’s celebrated industrial design chief will now look into both hardware and software designs, following the departure of Scott Forstall after years of friction with other top executives.

“Yesterday’s announcement all but confirmed that Ive will be with the company for the foreseeable future, putting to rest a recurring investor concern of an Apple without Ive,” Piper Jaffray & Co analyst Gene Munster said in a research note.

“This, combined with Tim Cook’s nine years remaining on his contract with Apple, suggests the two most critical management figures will be in place for the longer term.”

John Browett, recently hired as Apple’s retail chief, will also leave, the company said on Monday.

Eddy Cue, who runs online products, will lead Apple Maps and its Siri voice search software, while Craig Federighi, who oversees the OSX software that powers the Macintosh computers, will take charge of the iOS software.

“We think that despite the departure of Forstall who ran iOS development, iOS’s future is in good hands,” Munster said.

Forstall – long-time lieutenant of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs – refused to sign a public apology after the mapping software on the latest iPhone contained embarrassing errors and drew fierce criticism, Reuters reported citing sources.

His departure was years in the making, and came to a head with the Apple Maps incident, sources said.

“Though Scott Forstall’s departure is a surprise, this appears to be part of Tim Cook putting his own stamp on the company, and importantly, he is still surrounded by several key long-time Apple executives and innovators,” Robert W. Baird & Co analyst William Power said.

Even as Apple iPhone 5 launch in India has been delayed by a week to November 2, the company on Friday started billing inIndian rupee on the App Store.

The move will benefit the vast app developer community that sells on the App Store as well as the users who download paid applications and content from the company’s online store.

The billing so far was being done in US dollars. In comparison, Google Play Store has had INR pricing for long. Having a rupee pricing will definitely result in a big convenience for both buyers and sellers as there would be no dollar billing, making the purchase transactions easier and transparent.

Mobile apps revenue has consistently risen for both companies. Even though Google Android based smart phones have cornered more than half the total sales worldwide, Apple still retains a lion’s share in paid mobile app revenues and gets almost two-third of the total app revenue generated worldwide.

Apple nets record $8.2bn profit on iPhone sales :

Until now, Apple has paid $6.5 billion to developers selling their wares on the App Store and more than 35 billion apps have been downloaded since the online store opened in 2008, App Store currently offers over 7.5 lakh apps.

Meanwhile, shipment delays have resulted in the iPhone 5′s India launch date being pushed to next Friday i.e. Novermber 2 since Apple has a fetish for launching only on a Friday. When contacted, an Apple India spokesperson refused to comment.

However, a November 2 launch is certain and the stock is expected to start arriving at the master distributors Redington India and Ingram Micro within next two to three days, sources said. The two are expected to start booking pre-orders within a day or two.

Unable to open its own stores in India for direct retail due to unfavourable regulatory requirements and hampered by the high cost of distribution in the country, Apple has tweaked its retail strategy for the flagship product. Until the last time when iPhone 4S was launched, Apple had sold directly in India through its two carrier partners Airtel and Aircel.

However, the company has this time appointed for iPhone 5 two of the largest IT distributors Redington and Ingram Micro through whom the iPhone 5 stock will be routed, including the retail operations of the two existing carrier partners. It already has a relationship with the two for distribution of iPads and iPods, besides HCL Infosystems.

Since Apple sells only unlocked phones in India, other carriers and a host of other resellers too may be able to sell iPhone 5 now by directly buying in bulk from its master distributors.

Technically speaking, if Apple does not control the end pricing, some retailers might sell iPhone 5 cheaper than others, leading to differential pricing of iPhone 5 in India. The Apple spokesperson remained tight-lipped on the matter when asked about this.

More significantly, riding the vast distribution network of the two largest distributors, iPhone would become legally available practically across the country, definitely many more towns than just the large metropolitan cities.

Already, almost all Indian carriers are ready with nano SIM cards to support iPhone 5.

So far, Indian telecom carriers have steered clear from subsidising the handsets by bundling iPhone along with data plans, but without locked-in contractual plans. It means an unlocked iPhone is sold at full price after adding the taxes and import duties. This makes iPhone simply the costliest smartphone in a very price-sensitive country and leads to a thriving grey market.

Incidentally, unlocked iPhone 5 is has been available in India unofficially for three to four weeks and retails between a whopping Rs 85,000 to 1.2 lakh. These handsets are illegally imported in to India from various markets like Singapore and UK where Apple had started selling unlocked iPhone 5 early even though unlocked iPhone 5 is yet to be launched in most other markets, including the US.

Sources said iPhone 5 models are expected to be priced from between Rs 45,000 to Rs 61,000, unless Apple springs a big surprise by going in for an aggressive pricing.

In comparison, an unlocked 16GB iPhone 5 model will be sold in US for $649 plus taxes translating to a tag much lower than Rs 40,000.

At an astronomical price range between Rs 45,000-60,000 in India, how much sales volume Apple is able to notch up remains to be seen.

Windows 8 has officially launched, and from 12:01am local time, consumers will be able to get their hands on the official version of the Metro-fied OS .

The Steve Ballmer-led company has placed many thousands of man-hours into developing a whole new interface optimized for the so-called “Post-PC era,” and speaking of post-PC devices, the company also took the opportunity to show off new PCs from their partners like Dell, Samsung, ASUS and HP which are going on sale today.

In a separate show held an hour after the original Windows 8 launch, Microsoft also officially announced the launch of Surface RT, which will be available today starting at 10pm in US. Those having preordered the hybrid slab should receive their Windows 8 RT-enabled Surface tomorrow, and although many of us have had a good look at Windows 8 by means of the Consumer / Developer Previews released at various points this year, few will have managed to test out Windows 8 on a touch-based system. It will be intriguing to see what kind of consensus the first impressions and unboxings will form, but with both Windows 8 and the Surface with Windows RT having been lauded since the summer, one suspects the overwhelming majority will look favorably upon Microsoft’s most recent creations.

Existing PC users will be able to upgrade, with the system in place for transitioning to Windows 8 spanning 140+ markets and 37 different languages. As already learned, there’ll be two main editions of Windows 8 on sale – Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro, while Windows 8 Enterprise will cover businesses and organizations. Windows RT has been especially adapted to ARM-based tablets such as the Surface RT (Intel edition expected early ’13), and with all versions of Windows 8 pushing the new Internet Explorer 10 as well as the SkyDrive cloud-based service, there’s quite a lot of new bits and pieces for consumers to sink their teeth into.

While sci-fi-style advancements like bionic eyes that help restore human vision might be getting closer to reality, everyday gadgets like smartphones can still pose major hurdles to the blind and visually impaired.

A new device called Ray aims to make the smartphone space friendlier to the sight-challenged by integrating standard smartphone capabilities with the functions of specialty devices that many blind consumers now pair with basic mobile phones to create a full smartphone experience.

Rather than having to rely on audio-book readers, navigation tools, raised Braille labels, special bar-code scanners, and large-buttoned and voice-enabled MP3 players, therefore, they can turn to just one device.

The multifunction Ray combines off-the-shelf Android smartphone hardware powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor with a custom user interface designed for eye-free operation. The UI, developed in Israel, employs a touch screen, haptics, sensors, text-to-speech, and audio feedback to support phone calls, sending and receiving e-mails and text messages, social networking, remote device management, and more.

For example, “the user touches any position on the screen and that position becomes the starting point for selecting an audio book, messaging, or other activity,” Boaz Zilberman, CEO of Project Ray, the developer of the interface, said in a statement. “Navigation is enabled by a few simple finger movements in different directions. The phone’s built-in vibration capabilities and voice prompts provide user feedback and the UI learns to adapt its behavior based on users’ preferences and usage patterns.”

Trials of Ray are currently under way in Israel, where subscribers can use the device to access and download audio books, magazines, and periodicals from the country’s Central Library for the Blind, Visually Impaired and Handicapped over an advanced mobile broadband network rather than waiting to receive CD copies in the mail.

According to the World Health Organization, 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide — 39 million of those are blind and 246 million have low vision.

Eliza Cooper, a blind social-media consultant in New York who has critiqued new apps aimed at blind users of the iPhone, had a mixed initial reaction when she was  told about the Ray.

“I believe companies should not revert to creating third-party devices for the blind which provide access to smartphone technology but look different than the ones that their non-disabled friends have,” she said over e-mail. Still, given that the device claims to provide solutions to daily annoyances like identifying objects via bar codes and reading labels, she said, “I must admit that I am intrigued and would like to get my hands on one to try it out.”

SAN JOSE, California—October 23, 2012—Apple® today introduced an all-new version of its popular 13-inch MacBook® Pro featuring a stunning Retina™ display and all flash storage in a new compact design. At a mere 0.75 inches and 3.57 pounds, the remarkably portable 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is 20 percent thinner and almost a pound lighter than the current 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The new MacBook Pro packs more than 4 million pixels into its 13-inch Retina display, nearly twice the number of pixels in an HD television. At 227 pixels per inch, the Retina display’s pixel density is so high the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance, so images look sharp and text looks like it does on the printed page. With four times the pixels of the current 13-inch MacBook Pro, you can view and edit video in pixel-accurate 1080p and see a new level of detail in high resolution images.
